I was scared, angry and asked God, ‘Why me?’ I was going through a lot at that time – working, college, a separation and my baby came back from the Navy with a three-month-old baby.

Cancer factored significantly in Wendy’s life. She lost her mother and younger sister to breast cancer, her 17-year-old daughter to Sarcoma and later in life, she also lost her husband to cancer – but throughout it all, she still lived life to the fullest.

When the cancer came back, it was more aggressive. That’s when Coco went to CTCA and has been doing well ever since.

Elinor McNeel shared her younger brother’s prostate cancer journey with us. Unfortunately, his journey did not have a happy ending.

I was given the option to have a mastectomy or a lumpectomy but I was getting married in six months (October 2018).

A later prostate biopsy revealed that four of Derwin’s 12 samples taken from his prostate were malignant, although he felt perfectly fine health wise.

I pray that by sharing my health journey, I can be ‘that person’ for someone else in their time of need. It can make a world of difference!

During the fourth week of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting Team Chicago member Devon Keys. Keys is 55-years-old, married, has one son, two daughters, one granddaughter, is an Army vet and still actively employed. He enjoys bowling and fishing.

During the third week of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting Team Chicago member Marvin Weathersby. Weathersby is 67-years-old, married with one daughter, has a 6th degree black belt in Shorin-Ryu, is an instructor at Counter Strike Karate & Fitness, and a retired Chicago police officer. He is also a song writer, musician, professional sound/recording engineer, and an active member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians.

During the second week of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting Team Nittany’s team leader, Terry Watson. Watson is 43-year-old, married, has a son in college, a daughter in high school and is the author of two books. “I am happy and excited that Walking Wednesday is taking the time to recognize Men’s Health Month. For me, this month signifies the importance of not only physical health but also mental health.

During the first week of Men’s Health Month, TEAM CHICAGO is highlighting one of our members, Shawn Kennedy. Kennedy is a 63-year-old single father of an adult daughter and son, a grandfather of two, and a retired Chicago police sergeant.
