"I have a strong belief in God. It has helped me to get through life thus far."

During the third week of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting Team Chicago member Marvin Weathersby. Weathersby is 67-years-old, married with one daughter, has a 6th degree black belt in Shorin-Ryu, is an instructor at Counter Strike Karate & Fitness, and a retired Chicago police officer. He is also a song writer, musician, professional sound/recording engineer, and an active member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians.
Marvin Weathersby: “Since I was a teenager, I always had an interest in karate, weightlifting and music. In high school, I prepared for and passed the Marine Fitness Test, and started weightlifting. So as a young adult, I competed in bench press contests (Strong Athletes Against Steroids). I won numerous 1st and 2nd place awards, and I set the record for bench pressing 260 lbs. while weighing 135 lbs., and drug free. That’s why I wanted to get stronger, and it still continues today.
In 1998, I became a Chicago police officer at 39. My physical training and conditioning helped me to win the top Physical Fitness Award among my fellow cadets. I completed 105 push-ups in 60 seconds, had the most sit-ups and fastest 1.5 mile run. I later earned a silver medal in bench pressing for first responders on a national level.
I began studying martial arts in the mid-90s with Grand Master Larry Tankson – sparring, performing katas and using Tonfa sticks. I received my 1st degree (Shodan) black belt in 2005 and started teaching students. Years later, I received my 6th degree (Roku Dan) black belt in 2023 and was awarded the honorary title of Shihan. My martial arts interest became a way of life for me – a lifelong journey that continues to this day. It can help you with various issues in life, including health.
I have a strong belief in God. It has helped me to get through life thus far. I am thankful for the personal relationship I have with God. I love CPD retiree Shawn Kennedy for what he is doing to promote fitness and health with our Walking Wednesday group. He is making people aware of how important it is to improve their quality of life and he should be commended for it. I’m glad our paths crossed.”
