Men’s Health Month – Terry Watson

During the second week of Men’s Health Month, we are highlighting Team Nittany’s team leader, Terry Watson. Watson is 43-year-old, married, has a son in college, a daughter in high school and is the author of two books.

Terry Watson's Story

“I am happy and excited that Walking Wednesday is taking the time to recognize Men’s Health Month. For me, this month signifies the importance of not only physical health but also mental health. I value my time working out (although I must admit I have slacked off in recent years). Thanks to Walking Wednesday for helping me start the trend again! Back in the day, I had a very strict gym routine that I am hoping to get back to soon. I also cherish the time I spend with family, friends, and my therapist. I have been blessed to work in a field I am passionate about (Disability Advocacy) and at an excellent university (Penn State).

In November 2005, I experienced a series of illnesses that almost ended my life, twice. I initially spent a month in the hospital because all of my major organs malfunctioned, putting me in a ‘let’s wait and see’ situation that baffled the doctors. Through the grace of God and many prayers, I pulled through. On Christmas Day, I spiked a high fever that landed me back in the hospital. I was told my T-cells were so low that even catching a cold could be life-threatening. They placed me in a ‘bubble’—literally—for two weeks until I recovered. While this all sounds horrible, and it was, there is another positive side to this story.

During my illness, my work team at United Cerebral Palsy of Maine donated their vacation time to me to cover my bills, collected funds, and provided my toddler son with Christmas gifts. They wanted to ensure my family was taken care of. When my job transferred me from Maine to Boston, my wife took our old vehicle to the mechanic for repairs and tried to work out a payment plan. The mechanic fixed our van, gave my wife $200, and said, ‘We are praying for Terry. Don’t worry about the bill; this is on us.’ So, as I reflect on Men’s Health Month, I believe it’s important to emphasize not just physical and mental health, but also community health.”
