"Neli" Latson

Neli (pronounced NEE-lee) Latson is an autistic self-advocate whose traumatic experience with Virginia’s criminal justice system brought national attention to the intersection of race, disability, and justice. At age 18, a police encounter sparked by racial profiling — a 911 call about a young Black man in a hoodie sitting outside a public library — led to an altercation, injury to a responding officer, and a ten-year prison sentence for Neli. His story exposed deep systemic flaws and continues to fuel national conversations on race, disability, policing, and incarceration.
